Übermalt

I just discovered some more amazing work by Gerhard Richter. Exhibited from 20th February – 12th April this year at the German embassy in Geneva were UEBERMALTE FOTOGRAFIEN – PHOTOGRAPHIES PEINTES. Apparently it is a side work of Richter, largely unknown, certainly to me.

By placing paint on photographs, with all their random and involuntary expressiveness, Gerhard Richter reinforces the unique aspect of each of these mediums and opens a field of tension rich in paradoxes, as old as the couple – painting / photography –which has largely defined modern art.

First time I saw them I was struck by the beauty but also power they have, as well as the fact that you need a second look to figure out where the painting ends and the photo starts, and vice versa.
